NBA Awards/ Predictions

At the end of every season, the NBA rewards players with a series of awards to recognize personal achievement. These awards are staggered so that they are revealed daily through the start of the playoffs.

*updated winners

Defensive Player of the Year (DPOY)
Dwight Howard / preseason pick - Dwight Howard
This award has been handed out since 1982-83 to recognize individual defensive effort. The panel of judges is comprised of 120 NBA sportswriters and broadcasters, who cast votes for first, second, and third place. Only 16 players have claimed the award with Dikembe Mutombo and Ben Wallace each earning four DPOY titles.
2009/10 winner: Dwight Howard - 18.3 ppg, 13.2 reb, 2.8 blk, 0.9 stl
2010/11 winner: Dwight Howard - 22.9 ppg, 14.1 reb, 2.4 blk, 1.4 stl
Howard was the unbelievable favourite coming into the voting, and was given 114 of a possible 120 first-place votes. I had him picked in the preseason to win this award in a landslide, as just about everybody else did. Dwight becomes the only player to ever win the award three years consecutively and needs only one more DPOY award to tie Wallace and Mutombo for the most career titles, a feat he looks poised to achieve as the former youngest winner of the DPOY. Does this make Howard one of the most dominant defensive players ever? Howard dominates down-low, collects rebounds and blocks in bundles, had a league-high 66 double-doubles, changes opposing team's entire offensive strategies, and is far and beyond the best centre in the NBA right now with a high ceiling that allows for even more potential. Kevin Garnett and Tyson Chandler placed second and third in the voting.

Sixth Man of the Year
Lamar Odom / preseason pick - Jason Terry
Also awarded since the 1982-83 season, this award distinguishes the blue-collar guy generally. The first guy off the bench doesn't start games, but often finishes them. Sixth men bring an energy off the bench that affects the flow of the game and can shift momentum in their team's favour. Generally, this award recipient is a player on an elite team that could be a star, or at least a starter, on a lesser team. Twenty-five different players have won this award.
2009/10 winner: Jamal Crawford - 18 ppg, 2.5 reb, 3.0 ast, .449 FG%, 31.1 minutes
2010/11 winner: Lamar Odom - 14.4 ppg, 8.7 reb, 3.0 ast, .530 FG%, 32.2 minutes
Lamar's solid contributions and multi-faceted skill set allow the Lakers to stay afloat whenever Bynum has to miss some games averaging 16.3 and 10.2 in 35 games as a starter. A modified point-forward, Odom possesses dribbling and court-vision uncommon in a 6-10 player. Coming off a gold-medal summer where he played the role of veteran and glue-guy to a young US squad at the World Championships, Lamar hasn't slowed down. He's also the star of a reality TV show with his Kardashian wife. Odom also shot .382 from three-point territory, a career-high for him. Jason Terry (my preseason pick) and Thaddeus Young placed second and third in the voting.

Most Improved Player of the Year (MIP)
Kevin Love / my preseason pick - Mike Beasley
The NBA's Most Improved Player award recognizes the player who puts in the work in the offseason and makes the most significant leap. Most of the time, this means a player unexpectedly emerges to guide his team to unexpected success, but the MIP winner has never won the NBA championship in the same season since the inception of the award in 1985-86.
2009/10 winner: Aaron Brooks - 16.8 ppg, 2.6 reb, 5.6 ast, 209 3-pointers made, 35.6 minutes
2010/11 winner: Kevin Love - 20.2 ppg, 15.2 reb, 2.5 ast, .470 FG%, 35.8 minutes
Kevin Love always knew how to rebound, he just needed the floortime and the conscious recognition of his own talent following a Gold medal at the World's this past summer. Charles Barkley said during the season, you can "fake" scoring titles by hogging the ball on bad teams, but you can't fake rebounding. K-Love became an All-Star for the first time in his career and averaged a league-high 15.2 rebounds. Love also averaged 20.2 points per game, culminating in an NBA second-best 62 double-doubles including a streak that stretched 53 consecutive games. Love's rebounding was historically good, record-setting good. The 53-game double-double streak was the longest since 1974 and he became the first player to average at least 20 points and 15 rebounds since 1983. Love's 30 point, 30 rebound game on November 23rd was the first in twenty-eight years. Love also scored effectively throughout the season, setting career-highs in field goal percentage (.470), three-point field goal percentage (.417), and free throw percentage (.850). A hard-working talent not gifted with superhuman athleticism, Love uses a knowledge of the game and of the angles and busts his butt every night. A rebounding mentality can be learned, but the rebounding display that Love puts on every night is something essential and natural. Now recognized as a legitimate NBA talent, Love should continue to put up similar numbers consistently for years to come. LaMarcus Aldridge of the Portland TrailBlazers finished second in MIP voting and Dorrell Wright of the Golden State Warriors finished third.

Coach of the Year (COY)
Tom Thibodeau/ my preseason pick - Jerry Sloan (yikes)
The NBA's Coach of the Year award has been awarded longer than most of the other NBA awards, since the 1962-63 season. Titled the Red Auerbach trophy, it represents the coach who was able to best motivate his players and make the most out of his roster. The COY has been won by forty different coaches, the most being Pat Riley and Don Nelson who won three COY awards each. While Red Auerbach was a legendary coach who won nine titles with the Celtics in the 1950s and 60s, Tom Thibodeau began his head coaching career just this past season.
2009/10 winner - Scott Brooks - record 50-32 = .610%
2010/11 winner - Tom Thibodeau - record 60-22 = .756%
As a first year coach, "Thibs" led a Bulls team that was one step away from greatness to the best record in the NBA, and currently, the second round of the NBA playoffs. A defensive specialist and workaholic who has spent tireless years in multiple roles within the NBA, Thibodeau most recently helped the Celtics as a defensive tutor, co-ordinator and assistant coach. "I know there's a lot that's been said that I never sleep, I never eat, I never go home. Nah," says Thibodeau, but his relentless style rubbed off on his players and drove would-be-MVP Derrick Rose to the top of the league. Rose, had much to do with Thibodeau's success, but frontcourt duo Carlos Boozer and Joachim Noah missed a significant amount of court-time with injuries and the Bulls stayed afloat and still managed the best record in the NBA. His 62 wins also matches the record for most wins by a first-year head coach. The Bulls also never had more than two losses in a row. He brought Bulls basketball back to prominence, and for the first time since the MJ era the Bulls feel like legitimate title contenders.

Rookie of the Year (ROY)
Blake Griffin/ my preseason pick - John Wall
The NBA Rookie of the Year award, called the Eddie Gottlieb trophy, has been presented each season since 1952-53. Winning the award is a one-time thing, that can only be achieved in a player's first full season in the league. Thirteen ROY winners have gone on to win MVP of the league indicating the award usually foreshadows greatness and future achievement.
2009/10 winner: Tyreke Evans - 20.1 ppg, 5.3 reb, 5.8 ast, .458 FG%, 72 games started
2010/11 winner: Blake Griffin - 22.5 ppg, 12.1 reb, 3.8 ast, .506 FG%, 82 games started
When I picked John Wall to win rookie of the year this year in the preseason, I forgot about Blake. Picked #1 overall two years ago, he missed his entire rookie campaign while rehabbing from a knee injury sustained in a preseason contest. Because Blake never played a regular-season game last season, this was his first "official" season, and what a season it was. Blake had an explosive impact on the league and turned highlight-reels into his personal domain. With style, flair, grace, a mixed-cultural background, and a charismatic personality to boot, Blake became an icon on the lowly Clippers team who have only been above .500 once in the past 19 seasons. Not just a player of flash and image (as the dunk contest may have left haters believing), Blake showed substance to his game. One of only four players to average at least 20 points and 10 rebounds, he was also fourth overall in rebounding with 12.1 rpg, and third among rookies in assists with 3.8 apg. He earned his way as the first rookie on the All-Star team since Yao in 2003. His athleticism and personality make the Clippers more than an afterthought and his career future looks bright as long as he stays healthy and focused on developing his game beyond dunking. John Wall finished second in ROY voting and DeMarcus Cousins finished third.

Most Valuable Player (MVP)
Derrick Rose/ my preseason pick - Kevin Durant
The NBA MVP award is presented to the player who made the most significant impact on his team's success. This award doesn't always go to the highest scorer, the best defender, the most likeable guy, or even the guy who led his team to the top record in the NBA. Value is measured in the teams perceived success/ failure if that player hadn't been on the team. Awarded since 1955-56 the MVP trophy is titled the "Maurice Podoloff" award, after the NBA's first commissioner/ league president of the same name. Voting had been by player concensus until 1980-81, but has since been voted by a panel of sportswriters and broadcasters like the rest of the NBA awards. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar won the award six times, while Bill Russell and Michael Jordan each won MVP five times. Chicago reclaimed the award this season with 22-year old Derrick Rose.
2009/10 winner - LeBron James - 29.7 ppg, 8.6 ast, 7.3 reb, 1.6 stl, .503 FG%, 39.0 minutes/game
2010/11 winner - Derrick Rose - 25.0 ppg, 7.7 ast, 4.1 reb, 1.05 stl, .332 3P%, 37.1 minutes/game
The buzz around D-Rose winning the MVP was frenetic and seemed a result of Rose's wild popularity more than substance, but when the Bulls clinched the best record (62-20) in the regular season, Rose cemented his place in history as the league's youngest MVP. By leading the resurgent Bulls past star-studded Miami and Boston, Rose's workmanlike, consistent, yet explosive game, improved three-point shooting and dynamic slashing ability also made him a most-improved candidate in his third season. With a first-year coach and injuries to his frontcourt for much of the season, it was Rose that earned the spotlight even with his bashful, everyman personality. His honesty and unmediated love for his family, his city and the game of basketball were evident in his MVP acceptance speech. The only player to rank in the top 10 in both scoring and assists, Rose is currently trying to lead the Bulls through the second round of the playoffs and prove that his regular season performance was no fluke. Dwight Howard and LeBron James placed second and third respectively in the MVP voting.

My leftover preseason predictions

NBA regular season scoring champ - Kevin Durant/ preseason pick - Kevin Durant
At 27.7 points per game KD led the league for the second year in a row, a no-brainer pick.

East Champion - Chicago Bulls/ preseason pick - Miami Heat
It took the Heat too long to gel, they should have had a better season record

West Champion - San Antonio Spurs/ preseason pick - LA Lakers
The Spurs, when healthy, were as solid as people remember them. The Lakers didn't get the same luck.

Highlight of the Year - Blake over Mozgov/ preseason pick - LeBron from Wade
Bron and Wade haven't had that one, picture-perfect connection yet. And Blake was undeniable.

Dunk Champ - Blake Griffin/ preseason pick - Shannon Brown
Had Shanwow competed, he probably would have been robbed too, however, his LA status may have shifted the bias of the whole competition away from Blake and only Blake.

Biggest Bust - Yao Ming or Greg Oden/ preseason pick - Stephen Curry or Al Horford
The opposite of the MIP, this theoretical award would be given to the player who showed the most regression from one season to the next. Curry won the ASG point-guard challenge, Horford was an all-star and Yao and Oden missed the season, again. Just when you think it's safe to risk drafting them in fantasy leagues...

Playoff Predictions

First round NBA playoff predictions, *upon evaluating match-ups in game 1.

Eastern Conference
(1) Chicago Bulls - CHI wins in 5 games
(8) Indiana Pacers
Chicago's a great team, but they're not a dominating one and may let one slip to the scrappy Pacers.

(2) Miami Heat - MIA sweeps in 4 games
(7) Philadelphia 76ers
Look for Miami to flex it's muscle in the first round, and sweep in the ecstasy of the honeymoon phase

(3) Boston Celtics - BOS wins in 6 games
(6) New York Knicks
Boston is going to have to play tough and gritty, which is their game. I'd be surprised if NY keeps up this pressure, but Amare has the potential to be a playoff beast. We saw Boston's experience and clutch in game one and it has a defining factor in this series. The Celtics have been together longer, the Knicks need more time to gel.

(4) Orlando Magic - ORL wins in 7 games
(5) Atlanta Hawks
This is an odd rivalry, these teams always match up in the playoffs. Dwight has been dominant, but the Magic have yet to find a consistent second option on offense. This may take seven games, but Dwight can shoulder the Magic into the second round.

Western Conference
(1) San Antonio Spurs - SAS wins in 7 games
(8) Memphis Grizzlies
The Grizzlies are better than people think, and will put up a fight against the Spurs. The Spurs don't dominate anybody but always prove to be the better team in the end., so look for them to subtly eliminate the Grizzlies, provided Ginobili returns in good health and the rest of the Spurs stay healthy.

(2) Los Angeles Lakers - LAL wins in 6 games
(7) New Orleans Hornets
The Lakers will learn from the game one scare and come back strong. Phil Jackson will probably mould it into a learning experience for his squad on their path to championship glory, it just makes a better story anyways.

(3) Dallas Mavericks - DAL sweeps in 4 games
(6) Portland Trail Blazers
Dallas has the firepower, the Blazers have too many question marks. The sweep will screw up Dallas the rest of the playoffs and they will play the Lakers next...

(4) Oklahoma City Thunder - OKC wins in 7 games
(5) Denver Nuggets
An exciting and unpredictable series. I just think Oklahoma is a little more solid throughout its lineup and Denver doesn't have the starpower that a closer like Kevin Durant and a secong option like Russel Westbrook provides down the stretch in the playoffs.

My WESTERN Conference predictions revisited

WEST

Formula*
Team Name – Predicted games won - Actual games won = + or – from expected total

San Antonio – 54 – 61 = +7
LA Lakers –   66 – 57 = -9
Dallas –          62 – 57 = -5
Oklahoma –   56 – 55 = -1
Denver –        50 – 50 = 0
Portland –       47 – 48 = +1
New Orleans – 46 – 46 = 0
Memphis –     44 – 46 = +2
Houston –      48 – 43 = -5
Phoenix –       50 – 40 = -10
Utah –             55 – 39 = -16
Golden State – 44 – 36 = -8
LA Clippers – 46 – 32 = -14
Sacramento –  42 – 24 = -18
Minnesota –    23 – 17 = -6

My Deviation, and why
Denver – 0            Of all predictions this one is most baffling that I got right.
New Orleans -0     Chris Paul’s return was a spark, not quite 50 though.
Oklahoma -1             Durant didn’t translate his Gold success, but Russ stepped up
Portland +1              Consider that extra game a flukey Batum
Memphis +2            Solid, under the radar, in the playoffs. A surprise.
Dallas -5            Injuries to Caron Butler overcome by a deep bench
Houston -5            Yao’s fragility was supposed in my prediction, but out so soon?
Minnesota -6            It looked like Beas would break out, but worst record overall?
San Antonio +7       Would have been even higher if not for late-season slide
Golden State -8          Lee was solid, Curry wasn’t consistent, Monta underappreciated
LA Lakers -9            A ‘weird’ team that would go through highs and lows
Phoenix -10            50 wins has been standard for the Suns, but they’re clearly downtrending
LA Clippers -14          Gordon’s injury hurt, shouldn’t have traded Baron. Blake=savior
Utah -16             Blown up hard. First Sloan, then D-Will. Rebuild time
Sacramento -18        Honestly it was a bonehead move to predict the Kings winning 42 games and finishing above .500, but I’m just so sold on Tyreke Evans. Fransisco Garcia is a player that always disappears, but I figured Tyreke would make up for it. Tyreke had an injury-riddled season, but did sink the season’s  best shot. Dalembert and Cousins were a promising frontcourt duo, but I’ve heard negative things about their attitudes, unfortunately. Now the Kings look poised to relocate, and the future of basketball in Sac-town looks bleak.

My EASTERN Conference predictions revisited

EAST
Formula*
Team Name – Predicted games won - Actual games won = + or – from expected total

Chicago –   54 – 62 = +8
Miami –      70 – 58 = -12
Boston –     56 – 56 = 0
Orlando –    61 – 52 = -9
Atlanta –     48 – 44 = -4
New York – 41 – 42 = +1
Philadelphia – 40 – 41 = +1
Indiana –      37 – 37 = 0
Milwaukee – 55 – 35 = -20
Charlotte –   43 – 34 = -9
Detroit –       40 – 30 = -10
New Jersey – 39 – 24 = -15
Washington – 35 – 23 = -12
Toronto –       27 – 22 = -5
Cleveland –   30 – 19 = -11

My Deviation, and why
Boston – 0            I knew they would have a good record, not quite 60 wins
Indiana – 0            Figured they’d be middle of the pack, didn’t see them in the playoffs
New York +1             The addition of Carmelo helped and also hindered, a net even
Philadelphia +1     They hit .500, just about what I thought
Atlanta -4            Lost a few more close games than I thought they would
Toronto -5            Injuries robbed the Raps, they could have had 27 wins easy
Chicago +8            Better than I, and most, expected. Rose emerges as MVP?
Orlando -9            The trade shook things up, in a weird way. Gilbert?
Charlotte -9            Lost some ground, miss playoffs, lose Gerald Wallace and Felton
Detroit -10            Didn’t gel if they had they may be ten games better
Cleveland -11            Extected them to be bad, but that 26 game losing streak hurt
Miami -12               70 was a bit high, didn’t match last years’ Cavs record
Washington -12             Injuries, laziness, and Gilbert robbed this promising young team
New Jersey -15            The Melo-drama went way too long
Milwaukee -20            I expected big things from this Milwaukee club this year, they are my biggest letdown, losing twenty full games less than I expected. Jennings didn’t reach that next level, Bogut was limited in his return and the wing group of Salmons, Maggette, Gooden, Mbah a Moute, and Carlos Delfino underperformed. Michael Redd missed the season. Fear the deer no more, but maybe next year.

Raptors Full and Final Schedule

This has been firmly tacked to the side of my desk for the past six months. Updated day after day in agony. Relive the Raptors greatest moments; the four-game win streak in September, the only back-to-back wins of the new year on March 18th and 20th, and breaking the thirteen-game losing streak on February 4th. It's all here in lived detail, may not be for the feint of heart.

Raptors Coverage: April 13, Miami

Game 82 – Miami (L 97-79 / final record 22-60 / streak L2) Wednesday April 13, 2011
Watched the whole game
With the Raptors still resting much of their weary squad, and the Heat already booking a date for playoff action against Philadelphia Saturday at 3:30, this denouement was the anti-climax of a long season. The Heat’s big three all rested, so T.O. fans had little opportunity to boo Bosh. A loss ensured the Raps a top-3 lottery pick in the draft lottery.
Eddie House did the damage for the Heat on offense with 35 points including 14 in the first quarter, taking advantage of the young Raps who just wanted this to be over. Jamaal Magloire, the veteran Toronto faithful, hauled in a career-high 19 rebounds. Close until the fourth quarter, Miami’s bench of veterans overcame Toronto’s undermanned youth squad and held them to just 19% FG in the fourth quarter. The Raptors used to be an excellent shooting team, but the degradation of their distance ability has been evident this season as they lost their consecutive team three-pointer record and in this game are outshot 13-1 from downtown. The Raps also fall far short of the 100-point plateau that fans are accustomed to, partly because of injuries to key scorers, but also partly because of an increasingly stagnant offense.
DeMar had 18 on 8-20 shooting, while Bayless had a Raps high 21 points, but a sloppy 5 turnovers to 4 assists ratio. There is much uncertainty this offseason with the new collective bargaining agreement, GM Colangelo and Coach Triano are up for contract renewal, but the Raps are in excellent position with a young core, tradable assets, salary cap flexibility and a high draft pick.
It’s been an interesting ride documenting the season. I have never immersed myself in a team the way I did with the Raps this year and the experience has been invaluable. I have seen my own style be redefined by necessity and develop and adapt just like the Raptors did this year. I witnessed the growth of DeMar DeRozan into a solid NBA player, the rise and fall of Sonny Weems, I’ve seen players come and go, get injured and return, I’ve witnessed the defensive nightmare that Calderon and Bargnani pose as a starting PG-C combo, yet also witnessed the passion of Reggie Evans, and the ebb and flow of Toronto professional basketball culture and I have rode with it all. I’d like to extend a thank-you to the Raptors players, staff and all the other fans out there for this season, stay faithful, and we’ll rip it up next year.

Dunkus Interruptis

Hold everything folks, this Dunk just shattered the time-space continuum long enough for you to drop whatever you're doing and watch this unbelievable, league-rattling oop from the Beast,  Dwight Howard. On this play Jameer Nelson lobs the toss up behind the Sixers' Spencer Hawes, leaving Jrue Holiday jumping and not looking. Dwight ascends skyward and powers the ball through the hoop while bodying Jrue posterizingly out of the way. Dwight, in the process, leaves the Wells Fargo Center crowd in a state of shock. "Should we cheer? should we boo? should we go home right now?" Poor Jrue, the Sixers have had a great season and he's been solid, but people will remember this for a long time. Hide the women and children indeed.
"Somebody should have warned him about this Dwight Howard guy"

Raptors Coverage: April 11, @ Milwaukee

Game 81 - @ Milwaukee (L 93-86 / record 22-59 / streak L1) Monday April 11, 2011
Watched the first half
This was a close game a fun game to watch. For two teams that have rosters full of promise, the playoffs are a pipe dream for next year. On this night it was all about growth, understanding, learning, and earning maybe one last win of the year. Unfortunately for the Raptors, they came up short in the fourth quarter. Ultimately this loss may reward them, as a loss to Miami in the final game of the season on Wednesday night would ensure them the 3rd best chance at the highest pick in this June’s draft lottery, and secure top-5 draft position. Even Reggie sat this one out, with Joey Dorsey starting in his place and he did the unexpected with 10 points and 20 rebounds, including 10 offensive boards. Bayless had 20 points, 5 assists and DeMar finished with 17. Salmons and Jennings went for 24 and 21 points respectively for the Bucks, who finish 9th in the Eastern Conference. Look for an exciting game against Miami on Wednesday and Toronto hosts the Heat. The Heat already locked up the #2 spot in the East, and may not play their stars. Games Remaining Countdown: 1

Raptors Coverage: April 10, New Jersey

Game 80 – New Jersey (W 99-92 / record 22-58 / streak W1) Sunday April 10, 2011
Watched first quarter
Raptors took control early and held the lead and came away with a solid team effort for the win. The Raps redeem themselves against the Nets, with whom they had unfinished business following the triple-overtime loss in the special series in London, England. Brook Lopez absolutely went off recording 35 points and 11 rebounds against the undersized frontcourt of Ed Davis and Reggie Evans. Davis, James Johnson, DeMar DeRozan all finished with 18 points, while Jerryd Bayless scored 19 to cap a strong, young team effort. One Bayless to DMDR alley-oop early in the action really demonstrated the cohesion they have built over this final stretch of games without Calderon and without Bargnani as the primary offensive weapon. Reggie had 15 rebounds again. This depleted team only has a short time left this year and a win like this should be relished. Games Remaining Countdown: 2

Raptors Coverage: April 8, @ Philadeplhia

Game 79 - @ Philadelphia (L 98-93 / record 21-58 / streak L3) Friday April 8, 2011
Didn’t watch
A close game and the Raps had a chance to win or tie at the end but couldn’t come up with it. Some sloppy play down the stretch included Reggie Evans complaining about a no-call and getting a technical foul, then Triano complaining and getting tossed from the game. Bayless missed a three-pointer that could have tied the game, but he finished with 24 points, 8 assists. DeRozan had a game-high 27 points. The mix of offensive talent from the Sixers combined with their mix of veterans gave them an advantage and allowed them to win a close game. DMDR also had the best HORSE move, losing his shoe on the play only to slip it back on and make a jumpshot just seconds later. With Barbosa and Amir out, Bargs and Calderon still out, Sonny Weems left at halftime causing serious depth issues for the undermanned Raps squad. This season just needs to be over already so we can regroup both mentally and physically as a team. Games Remaining Countdown: 3

Raptors Coverage: April 6, Cleveland

 Game 78 – Cleveland (L 104-96 / record 21-57 / streak L2) Wednesday April 6, 2011
Didn’t watch
Honestly, this one didn’t matter. It should have been close and may have been close late, but the Cavs built a 60-40 halftime lead and dominated most of the game. Baron Davis hooked up with JJ Hickson and Alonzo Gee of all people to dominate on the offensive end. Hickson had an impressive 28 points and 10 rebounds, Baron had 19 points and 12 assists. James Johnson and Joey Graham almost got into an altercation after a Johnson foul, which would have been fun to watch because Johnson has a black belt. Bayless had 28 points, DeMar finished with 19, and Reggie had 15 points and 13 rebounds. The Cavaliers get consecutive wins for the first time since November and they now sit just four games back of the Raptors for last place in the league. Raps without Amir, Bargs and Leandro for various injuries. Calderon’s attempted return went sour as he went 0-7 from the field, while his backup, Jerryd Bayless scored 28 points. He’s averaging 24 points over the past 4 games on 53% shooting. The Raptors play next at Philadelphia where the Sixers are in a heated race with the Knicks for the Eastern conference sixth seed in the upcoming playoffs. Games Remaining Countdown: 4

NCAA Finals Impressions

UCONN (3) v BUTLER (8)
53   -   41
The first half ended 22-19. This was a pretty bad championship game I can now say upon reflection. Yeah it was gritty, and yeah the players played hard, but they shot record-low percentages and just couldn't make a shot. The commentators I thought, were exceptionally hard on these kids who were clearly working hard, but just weren't getting any kind of luck. For Connecticut Kemba Walker was impressive, Jeremy Lamb came through with 12 points in the second-half, and Alex Oriakhi was a presence in the paint denying the lane. For Brad Stevens and Butler it is the second year in a row losing in the NCAA finals. UCONN took over in the second half and went on a 20-3 run led by the energy of Kemba Walker who was awarded the Most Outstanding Player award. For coach Jim Calhoun it is his third national championship, making him only the fourth college coach to accomplish the feat, and also the oldest at 68 years of age. Butler didn't score a field goal inside the three-point line until seven minutes into the second-half.

Watched the first half
The Knicks are back, and honestly making it hard to watch for Raptors fans in the suddenly crowded Atlantic Division. The Knicks expose the Raps for 78 points in the first half, once led by 29, and go on to win by 13. They were clowning in the first half, Carmelo was shooting from everywhere and hit three-for-three from downtown. DeMar hit a halfcourt buzzer-beater at halftime and finished one point shy of a career high with 36 points, and grabbing 10 rebounds. The Knicks pull within one game of the Sixers for sixth place in the East and have won four straight, so on this night they were just too much for the Raptors to handle. The Raps do better on the second game of back-to-back games anyways, so they will try to regroup tonight at home against Cleveland. Games Remaining Countdown: 5

"Thank God this never happened, eh Knicks fans?"

Watched the first quarter
Then went to a Shad concert, downtown Ottawa. I wear my Raps hat, as is customary, yet Bartender has a Bulls hat and my other friend there is pulling my slacks; “Hey Devin, were they giving those hats away?” Then Shad comes out and shows me love. He comes onstage to “Compromise” and rhymes “Yo when I’m writing I repeatedly edit words and rework tracks/ I’ll admit I’m like the Raptors I’ve got weak drafts.” While standing right over me and using my shoulder to boost him up on the amp to spit this line we make eye contact and he nods to my hat. No lie. The later reference in the song to “Hafa” Araujo shows Shad’s not hating, he’s just feeling what I feel. The culture of the Raptors is undeniably one of losing and one that needs to change. Look at what the Bulls have done, after last year placing just one seed ahead of the Raptors they’re now first in the East. Meanwhile the Raps took another step back. Derek Rose has taken a huge, fast, step forward and he shows it in this game with 36 points, 10 assists, and three blocks including an athletic highlight block on James Johnson. Boozer had 18 and 10 rebounds, while Luol Deng scored an efficient 17 points. For the Raps DeMar has 26 points and Jerryd Bayless has 26 with 8 assists in the starting point position, Ed Davis has 17 and 11. Solid job by the young crew, try to keep this losing streak going to get a better draft pick? Games Remaining Countdown: 7

Game 76 – Orlando (W 102-98 / 21-55 / streak W1) Sunday, April 3, 2011
Watched the final minute
Unfortunately I was working on final essays during this game, while incarcerated in the Carleton University Library. I managed to hustle from the trainstop up to my apartment in time to catch the final minute. Not worth it? Not for some. The Magic were banged up, but the Raps have been all year, this time without both Bargnani and Calderon. Raps faithful booed the returning Hedo Turkoglu, and Ed Davis got the crowd involved early with a dunk in the lane on Brandon Bass. It is again the combination of DeRozan (24 points) and Bayless (24 with 8 assists) that led the Raps, only this time, to victory. The real difference-maker was Reggie Evans who scored only 4 points, but grabbed 17 rebounds, keeping Dwight off the glass. As a result Dwight Howard finished with 31 and 9 rebounds, breaking his 33-game streak of consecutive double-doubles. A hard fought win, and some Bayless free-throws ice it late over the Magic who are limping into the 4th seed in the East. Raps play next Tuesday in New York. Games Remaining Countdown: 6

Fast don't lie, watch out for Derek Rose on the chase-down block too
Fast don't lie commercial, a little annoying, but necessary for reference

Raptors Coverage: March 30, Milwaukee

 Game 74 – Milwaukee (L 104-98 / 20-54 / streak L5) Wednesday March 30, 2011
Watched second half
Remember when the Raptors were in the Bucks’ position last year? Sitting just out of the playoffs, scrapping teams like the Pacers and Bobcats in a show of pride. Last year the Raps played right down to the wire, with a do –or-die game against Chicago. This year Chicago is trying to lock up first place in the East, while the Raps are trying to secure good draft position. This being the case, the Bucks just needed this game more than the Raps, who, some would argue, would be best off losing the remaining games for a chance at a better draft pick. Sacramento and New Jersey have passed the Raps in wins, and only Washington (19), Minnesota (17) and Cleveland (15) now have worse records than the Raps (20). With 8 games remaining, the Raps should secure a top-5 pick in the lottery, maybe even top-3 if Washington surges. Somebody like Perry Jones would look great in a Raptors uniform with our young core. Speaking of the young core, Bargnani has 22 and 2 rebounds, DeMar has 20, James Johnson grabs 10 rebounds, but all Raps generally struggle against Milwaukee’s big frontcourt (Bogut 17 and 10, Gooden 22 and 11) and stopping the point position (Jennings 25 points, 7 assists). Last game of March, the Raps go 4-10 on the month and will play Chicago on Saturday April 2. Games Remaining Countdown: 8
